GAME NIGHT 10/8: Aiea/Leilehua

A modest three games on the schedule today on Oahu.

It’s win or go home for Aiea (3-5, 3-4 OIA Blue) and Leilehua (3-5, 3-4 OIA Red) in the first round of the OIA playoffs at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.


HISTORY: Leilehua leads the series 25-7 in the Prep Bowl and state championship eras.

9:30: Game over.

9:24: Kato’s pass to Fabian Bautista goes to the 1. On the next play, Tome scores his third TD of the game. The extra point kick is wide.
>> LEILEHUA 42, AIEA 27. 11 seconds left in game.

9:22: Aiea drives to the Leilehua 36. It’s fourth down and 1.

9:10: Kato’s 49-yard pass to Sam Okamoto pushes the ball to the Leilehua 1. On the next play, Tome scores from 1-yard out. Kato kicks the extra point.
>> LEILEHUA 42, AIEA 21. 1:51 left in the game.

8:58: On fourth and 1 from the 29, Tome runs and comes up about a foot short. Mules ball.

8:55: Aiea is driving again. Kato gains 1 yards on fourth down for a first down.

8:46: Aiea’s Austin Savea appears to recover an onside kick, but a Na Alii player touched the ball before it went 10 yards.

8:43: Kato throws a touchdown strike to Matsunami from 19 yards out. The Mules’ Vitale Afoa intercepts Kato’s 2-point conversion pass.

8:41: Starting with great field position, Aiea is on the move. A 21-yard Kato to Ty Matsunami pass goes for 21 yards to the Leilehua 19.

8:38: Mules go three and out and will punt.

8:36: THIRD QUARTER ENDS.

8:35: A Kato pass to Tome covers 16 yards, but on the next play, Leilehua’s Lopez intercepts a Kato pass (his second interception of the night) at the 1 and returns it to the 15.

8:33: Kato recovers Aiea’s onside kick. Na Alii are driving.

8:28: Na Alii facing a fourth down and 19 at the 24. Kato hits Tome with a swing pass and Tome eludes a handful of tacklers for a 24-yard touchdown. Aiea is on the board. Kato’s 2-point conversion pass to Fabian Bautista is good

8:26: Kato rips off runs of 16 and 14 to advance the ball to the Leilehua 20.

8:20: Andres escapes a bit of pressure and picks up some blocking for some extra time before unleashing a 41-yard scoring pass to a wide-open Kendrick Beitzel. Makue kicks his sixth extra point.
>> LEILEHUA 42, AIEA 0. 7:29 left in the third quarter.

8:18: Second half is underway. Mules driving.

7:55: HALFTIME.

7:52: With the ball at their own 8, things go awry for Na Alii. A Kato to TeeJay Tome handoff is unsuccessful and the ball bounds into the end zone, where Leilehua’s Odin Mersberg pounces on it for a touchdown. Makue kicks the extra point.
>> LEILEHUA 35, AIEA 0. 49 seconds left before halftime.


7:48: Piceno tosses a 1-yard scoring pass to Phifer. Makue’s kick is good.
>> LEILEHUA 28, AIEA 0. 1:06 left before halftime.

7:45: An Andres screen pass to Piceno covers 29 yards to the Aiea 1. Na Alii call timeout.

7:43: Piceno razzles and dazzles for a 26-yard gain to the Aiea 22.

7:38: Leilehua’s Donavon Ugalino sacks Kobe Kato for a 10-yard loss. It’s fourth down and 21 for Na Alii. They are punting.

7:36: Maae-Liupaono is in at quarterback for Aiea.

7:33: Asing catches a 10-yard pass from Kato and Aiea gets another 15 yards on an illegal helmet contact penalty on the Mules.

7:31: Destry Pulawa Lopez steps in front of a Kato pass for an interception and a 49-yard return for a touchdown. Makue’s extra-point kick is good.
>> LEILEHUA 21, AIEA 0. 6:21 left in the half.

7:26: Piceno’s pass to Andres is incomplete. Na Alii ball at their own 31.

7:25: Mules call timeout with a fourth down and 4 to go situation at the Aiea 31.

7:21: Andres hits Watson in stride for a 48-yard gain to the Aiea 37.

7:19: Pookela Banis Chun’s sack of Kato for 11 yards halts Na Alii’s next drive and they punt. Mules ball at their own 9.

7:15: FIRST QUARTER ENDS.

7:13: An 18-yard pass from Piceno to Kawai Phifer, a 14-yard pass from Andres to Piceno sets up Andres 43-yard touchdown heave to Phifer. Makue kicks the extra point.
>> LEILEHUA 14, AIEA 0. 34 seconds left in the first quarter.

7:07: Aiea running back Isaiah Ripley goes up the middle for a 27-yard gain to the Mules’ 4, where he is hauled down and fumbles into the end zone. Leilehua’s Jacob Schmidt recovers.

7:05: Zelius Maae-Liupaono intercepts an Andres pass. Aiea ball at the Leilehua 38.

7:03: The heat is on. Three Leilehua rushers nearly bring Kato down but he gets a pass off. Incomplete. Mules ball.

7:00: Aiea calls timeout. It’s fourth down and 17 from the 34.

6:58: After a 15-yard penalty, Aiea faces a third down and 24 at the Mules’ 41.

6:57: Gage Asing catches a slant pass from Kato for a 32-yard gain to the Leilehua 27.

6:54: Kato scrambles for a 12-yard gain and Na Alii is approaching midfield.

6:53: Aiea quarterback Kobe Kato completes two short passes for his team’s first first down.


6:47: Quarterback Kona Andres finds Charles Watson for a 49-yard gain on Leilehua’s first play from scrimmage. Three plays later, Kaleo Aloha Piceno, in at quarterback, goes around the right side on a keeper for a 6-yard touchdown. Akoni Tom Makue kicks the extra point.
>> LEILEHUA 7, AIEA 0. 8:09 left in the first quarter.

6:45: Aiea goes three and out on its first possession.

    What happened to the Kame Alo kid (Aiea wr) He did not play?? Talented player..

    At least Leileihua put up 15 points on Kahuku, which is the best in 2 seasons. Cept they gotta play at Kahuku.

    Coach Tokuda should go back to Aiea and take over Aiea football and give back to his alumni & community…….
