GAME NIGHT 10/7: Saint Louis/Punahou

The game of the week is for a share of the ILH regular season championship as Saint Louis plays Punahou in a rematch of the Crusaders’ 49-13 win on Sept. 16.

Brady drives Punahou down the field with a couple of fourth-down completions, including a 14-yard TD pass to Koa Eldredge with 2:07 remaining. 40-20.

Crusaders ball at midfield. Cordeiro remains in the game. Tamarick Hallums gets 12 yards on his first carry. Tomasi Fakatoumafi with the TFL. Fourth-and-7 after three runs and Cordeiro goes deep to Makoa Close for a 43-yard TD. 40-13, 4:01. Cordeiro will likely finish 18-for-30 for 228 yards, 2 TD and a pick and two rushing TDs as well.

High snap on the punt and it goes out of the back of the end zone. Safety for Saint Louis. 33-13, 6:58.

Punahou starts on its 12. Fourth-and-1 on the 21. Delay of game. Punahou will punt. Senior Alama Uluave was not in at center on that fourth-down play. First time we’ve noticed him out.

Saint Louis will start on its 35. One handoff and two QB scrambles and Saint Louis goes three-and-out. This has been a frustrating second half on both sides, although Punahou clearly has more energy right now.

Punahou comes out with the direct snap to Tufono who follows his defenders down to the 1. Fourth-and-goal from the 1. Direct snap to Tufono who DIVES into the end zone for a 1-yard TD run. My goodness. Timeout on the extra point. Punahou goes for 2. No good as the pass is incomplete.

Onsides kick and Marist Liufau recovers for Punahou. Punahou ball. Late hit called on Saint Louis moves it to the 30. Moore called for pass interference to put it on the 15. Punahou goes to that matchup again, Moore vs. Falatoa, and another PI on Moore. Purcell shoots in again on a run and gets a TFL. Second-and-goal from the 5. Isaiah Tufaga with the stop. Third-and-goal and Saint Louis called for roughing the passer. First-and-goal at the 3. Botelho cleans up a gang tackle for a loss of 2. No idea what Punahou is doing here. They had practiced wildcat, were using it to start, and don’t go to it with Tufono once. All handoffs, effectively wasting a blocker in the QB. Second-and-goal at the 5. Tufono stopped for no gain to end the third quarter.

Brady (4-15, 39 yards) remains in at QB. Brady with the PERFECT throw to Vincent Terrell for 63 yards. Purcell looked like he was going to pick it off underneath but it’s right past his outstretched hands and hits Terrell on stride. Fade to Andrei Iosivas is good for a 12-yard TD. Punahou strikes quick on two great throws by Brady.

Cordeiro eludes the sack, runs to his right and hits Mitchell Quinn on the 27-yard TD pass. 31-0 Crusaders, 3:34.

Bad snap by the center and Saint Louis recovers.

Crusaders three-and-out. Punahou’s defense has come out fired up in the second half. Cordeiro contained inside the pocket and hasn’t done much.

Brady just overthrows a receiver inside the 20 on fourth-and-5. Turnover on downs.

Jake Tsukada drops back, reads Cordeiro’s eyes and gets an INT for the Punahou defense.

Brady in at QB and air-mails an open receiver on second down. Terrell gets 5 on third down to move the chains. Third-and-1 at the Saint Louis 35 and Purcell reads it again and drills the QB on the handoff. Fumble is recovered by Punahou but a loss of 3. They go on fourth down and pass is broken up by Moore. Great play.


Saint Louis will receive. Crusaders bring it back out near midfield but a fumble caused on a hit from behind and Sylus Fonoti recovers for Punahou.

Vincent Terrell gets 5 yards on a reverse. Punahou trying anything at this point. Brady goes deep and he puts it on the hands of Liufau at WR but Liufau can’t bring it in. Botelho ends the first half with his third sack of the game for Saint Louis.

Saint Louis ball on its 35. Gilman shoots in to tackle Cordeiro for a loss on third down. Fourth-and-6 from the 26. Saint Louis calls timeout. Pass goes out of the back of the end zone. Turnover on downs.

Brady now back at QB and has a receiver streaking open down the left seam but misses him. Punahou three-and-out. Buffanblu seem clueless on offense.

Cordeiro just shredding the Buffanblu defense apart. Chance Beyer with a 1-yard TD run to make it 24-0. 4:54.

Stephen Barber in at QB and he’s taken down hard after bobbling the snap. He loses 8. Now Nui Adolpho in at QB and he’s sacked by Botelho for a loss of 10. Powers runs for 2 and Punahou content to just punt. It’s a mess for the Buffanblu on offense right now.

Junior DL Kennedy Freeman with a sack for the Buffanblu. Third-and-13 for Saint Louis. Third-and-8 after Punahou jumps early. QB draw is a 10-yard TD for Cordeiro. 17-0, 10:16.

Punahou starts Q2 first-and-10 on its 18. Noa Purcell drops back into coverage and gets the pick on Brady.

Jonah Panoke with the spin move after a reception to break a tackle and he picks up 18. Punahou’s DB’s play ping-pong ball on a deep throw and can’t come up with the pick. Third-and-6 on the 49. Quinn with a diving attempt deep and the ball squirts out at the last second. Saint Louis punts. End of the first quarter.

Punahou going wildcat with Tufono. First carry goes for 6 yards but Punahou whistled for a hold. Fourth-and-1 on the 27. Tufono stuffed for no gain. Crusaders ball. Saint Louis D-line playing well despite the absence of Tuitele.

Saint Louis roughs the kicker but it gets even worse as the punt is bobbled and recovered by Joshua Shewalter. Punahou declines the penalty and takes over on the Crusaders 36.

Kama Moore gets beat initially but does a great job recovering to break up the pass intended Iosivas. LB Isaiah Feary with a sack off the edge and Punahou is three-and-out.

Crusaders ball on their 33. Cordeiro with four straight completions before junior DB Jake Tsukada breaks up a pass in the end zone. QB draw goes for 19 for Cordeiro. Ola Aina nearly with the INT for Punahou. Marist Liufau and Alakai Gilman come on the blitz to sack Cordeiro and Jacob Tobias hits a 33-yard field goal. 10-0, 4:27.

Brady goes up top and a diving grab hauled in by Andrei Iosivas. Great catch for 18 yards. OH MY. Noa Purcell just reads the run perfectly and absolutely crushes the RB for a 2-yard loss. That hurt me up in the press box. Brady’s pass is out wide and Punahou will punt.

Chevan Cordeiro at QB for Saint Louis. He misfires on his first two throws and it’s quickly third-and-10. Cordeiro scrambles and hits Zhane Chang-Holloway for 12 yards. Next play and Cordeiro takes off up the middle and he turns on the speed. GONE! Wow. Cordeiro with a blazing fast 33-yard TD run. 7-0 just like that. 9:22.

Punahou will receive. Buffanblu start on their 24. Maninoa Tufono at RB. LB Jordan Botelho with a sack but Tufono gets the first down on a third-down carry. Botelho forces a fumble by Tufono and Kamo’i Latu recovers for Saint Louis.


Punahou will start sophomore Hugh Brady at QB. Also, Saint Louis junior DT Faatui Tuitele will not start for the Crusaders.

The sun is coming out for the second game of this ILH doubleheader.

    Anywaaaays!! you said that right!! there’s more Kahuku players on the Puns roster than the Crusaders, oh , and even former Coaches from Kahuku too, no can, Cal Lee, Ron Lee, Vinny Passes, and the rest of the Crusaders coaching staff just too good.

    Coach Lee,Vinny and the other 16 coaches, along with 10 trainers, gophers and of course June Jones ,director of hs football only. They could field 3 high school teams, with coaches and not forfeit. Good for them. Some kids leave StL because they just want to play.

    COACH C, WHY YOU CRYING LIKE A BABY, YOUR TEAM CAN’T BEAT ST. LOUIS ANYWAY, WHO EVER WHINES IS SO JEALOUS OF THE CRUSADERS, JUST SUCK IT UP. Kahuku has a tough date with Mililani.
