Punahou’s McKenna tops All-State team

The face of high school boys soccer changed a little bit this year.

Punahou’s Duncan McKenna gave his school its fifth player of the year award, and second in a row, but that is where the normalcy ended.

McKenna was one of only six seniors named on this year’s Star-Advertiser Stellar Eleven, the fewest ever after nine seniors graced last year’s team. The entire team was released in Sunday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser which you can read here.

The change was not limited to Oahu, as the Neighbor Islands, led by Baldwin’s Angelo Deloso-Flocco, put four guys on the first team. That is the most for the Neighbor Islands since 2005.

Deloso-Flocco was the only player to repeat this year. He is the first Baldwin boy to repeat since Keola Nobriga in 2002-2003. He has a chance to join an elite list of three-time first teamers in two years, but more than half of them failed to sustain it. The last three-timer was ‘Iolani’s Josh Adachi from 2012-14. Kamehameha-Maui’s Cody Felipe is the only Neighbor Island boy to do it.

Other Neighbor Island first teamers this year are Laukoa Santos of Kealakehe, Braden Kojima of Hawaii Prep and Baldwin keeper Jorge Perez-Martin. Hawaii Prep boss Richard Braithwaite was selected the coach of the year.

>> Punahou has had the Player of the year in successive years for the first time since Nick Love and Chris Walker in 2006 and 2007. Goalkeeper Tyler Ohata was the player of the year last year.

>> Goalkeeper Jorge Perez-Martin also made the first team from Baldwin this year, the first time the Bears have had multiple selections since senior forwards Kimo Ballesteros and Brady Nunes in 2005.

>> ‘Iolani got Alex Liu on the team this year after being shut out last season. Before that the Raiders had a string of four straight years with at least one selection. Liu is a junior and has a chance to become Iolani’s first repeater since Josh Adachi from 2012 to 2014. He would be the first field player to repeat since KJ Ahlo in 2013-14.

>> Kaiser had multiple selections (Noah Makulehua and Makana Sringvonsana) for the first time since they reached the state final in 2011.

>> Sringvonsana is the first sophomore to make the team since Brennan Joaquin of KS-Maui in 2014 and one of only 10 sophomores since 2000 to make it. The all sophomore team: Makana Srinvonsana (Kaiser), Brennan Joaquin (KS-Maui), Josh Adachi (Iolani), Danny Higa (Kalani), Ian Sutherland (Pac-Five), Cody Felipe (KS-Maui), Kekoa Osorio (Kamehameha), Syd Tom (Leilehua), David Gualdarama (Kamehameha) and Shaunsey Saito (Campbell).

>> Kalani was shut out of the first team for the first time in three years.

>> Kamehameha has not had an all-state first teamer since 2010.

>> Kapolei has had at least one player on the first team for three years in a row (Branden Wong). The junior can be the first Hurricane to repeat on the list since Shandon Hopeau last year.

>> Kealakehe’s Laukoa Santos made it on the Stellar Eleven this year, the first time for that program since Keoni Yates in 2014.

>> Mid-Pacific was left off the list for the first time in four years.

>> Punahou has had at least one first teamer every year since 2008 and had two this year after landing three last year.

>> Braden Kojima is Hawaii Prep’s first (and only) All-State first teamer since CJ Cintas in 2006.
