Radford’s Peralta going for rare OIA slam

Radford’s Angela Peralta is in the 147-pound bracket of the OIA wrestling championships this weekend, seeded first and going for her fourth league title.

If she can pull it off, she would become just the third girl to complete the slam. She would join Farrington’s Tani Ader from 2005-2008 and Moanalua’s Caylene Valdez from 2000-2003.

To put the accomplishment in perspective, four girls have completed the state slam with only Valdez pulling off both. Peralta, who started her career at Campbell, has one state title to her credit but four medals.

She will not get a rematch with Kahuku’s Teniya Alo, though. Alo beat Peralta at 145 during the regular season to become Hawaii Prep World’s P4P No. 1 and is seeded first in the 134 class.

Alo began her career at ‘Iolani and is going for her first OIA crown after two ILH titles.

Mikayla Abe of Pearl City will be going for her third OIA championship, this time at 124 pounds. She would be the first Charger to collect three since Sanoe Spencer in 2012.

Pearl City is the defending league champion. Peralta, who was part of two team titles at Campbell, will not be in the mix to add a third. There is only one other Ram entered in the tournament.

Either Tiare Ikei of Kaiser or Roosevelt’s Macy Higa could get their second OIA title, but not both. They are entered on opposite sides of the 114-pound bracket.

Other girls going for their second trip atop the podium at Leilehua are Kapolei’s Allie Mahoe (119 pounds), Viviana Barcina of Kahuku (129), Pearl City’s Jennie Fuamatu (186) and Mildred Keopuhiwa of Waianae (227).

Brianna Leong of Leilehua (104) will be going for her second despite losing last year.
