The ILH baseball season finally came to an end on Friday with ‘Iolani defeating Punahou 11-5 at Hans L’Orange Park.
The game originally started a week ago but was halted in the bottom of the second inning with the Raiders ahead 7-2.
Micah Miyahira‘s three-run triple helped ‘Iolani pull away to finish the ILH season at 11-3-1, a half-game ahead of Punahou 11-4.
With the Buffanblu loss, Mid-Pacific clinched the ILH regular season and a return trip to states after missing the tournament last year.
Both Punahou coach Keenan Sue and ‘Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira seemed relieved the regular season was over on Friday. Punahou played for the third time in four days, all in games that had to be made up because of the rain.
“It’s a brand new season. Everybody is the same,” Sue said. “First seed helps but whether you are the second or the seven seed, same thing. You’ve got to go out and win games.”
The Buffanblu open the tournament today against Maryknoll at Noon at Central Oahu Regional Park. ‘Iolani will play Pac-Five at Hans L’Orange Park at 3:30 p.m. Saint Louis will play Kamehameha at Central Oahu Regional Park at noon.
Damien and St. Francis will play at 6:30 p.m. in a Division II game at Hans L’Orange Park.
‘Iolani closed with its fifth consecutive win and has won eight of nine entering the tournament.
‘Iolani shortstop Shaydon Kubo reached bases four times. He doubled and scored in the first inning and walked and scored in the second.
Micah Yonamine added two doubles and three RBIs and Shane Sasaki had two hits and scored twice.
“It comes down to just trusting what they do and trust what they practice,” Kurt Miyahira said. “They’ve been together for awhile. They know what to do.”
Jake Tsukada doubles, tripled, walked twice and scored three times and Kalae Harrison went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Punahou.
