Iolani chose one of its own to lead its boys volleyball program.

The Raiders announced on Friday that former player Sean Carney has been named their new boys volleyball coach.

Carney takes over for Carl Rallita, who stepped down after three seasons.

Carney was the head coach at Maryknoll for the past two seasons, capped with a third-place finish in the ILH last year. Carney’s Spartans went 2-1 against the Raiders last year and Iolani finished fourth in the league.

The 29-year-old was an assistant on Hawaii’s staff in 2013 after four years of playing for the Rainbow Warriors serving the final two as team captain.

He led Iolani to a state championship as a player in 2004, when he was selected as the Honolulu Advertiser’s player of the year.
