HAWAII GROWN: Alo a candidate for national award

Oklahoma freshman Jocelyn Alo, a two-time Gatorade Hawaii state player of the year while at Campbell, is one of 25 candidates for the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award, the NFCA announced today.

Alo leads the Big 12 with 19 homers, 60 RBIs and a 1.009 slugging percentage.

Nationally, Alo ranks second in homers, third in slugging, fifth in RBIs and sixth in total bases with 113. She’s hitting .446 with an on-base percentage of .568.


Alo has started all 41 games of her freshman season for the second-ranked Sooners primarily at designated player.


Her solo homer on Tuesday allowed the Sooners to beat Tulsa 1-0 to improve to 39-2 for the season. It’s the best 41-game start to the season in school history.


Ten finalists for the award will be unveiled on May 10 and the top three will be revealed on May 23.

The 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year will be announced on May 29.
