Two Neighbor Islands athletes are the recipients of the Gatorade Hawaii track and field athletes of the year award — Rey Cadiz of Baldwin and Chenoa Frederick of Kamehameha-Hawaii.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track.

Cadiz, a 6-foot-1, 163-pound junior, broke a 19-year-old state meet record in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.20 seconds. He recorded that time in the trials and then went on to win the final in 14.53. He also won the 300 hurdles in 38.9.

Cadiz is also a member of the school’s Jr. ROTC and has volunteered at a food bank and with youth sports programs.

“Rey had a lot of adversity this year,” Baldwin coach Tracy Enos said in a news release. “He was injured early and we had to bring him along slowly, but he really turned it up a notch when the real competition started. He hurt his hamstring at state and we didn’t even know if he could finish the 300 hurdles, but he turned it on in the straightaway and won it. He set a tone for everyone on the team.”

Chenoa Frederick is the Hawaii Gatorade girls track and tield athlete of the year. Jamm Aquino / Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Frederick, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, won three individual events at the state meet. She captured the 100-meter dash in 12.52 seconds, recorded a meet-record 39 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump, and won the long jump in 17-5.75. She also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash.

Frederick has served as a peer mentor at school.

“Chenoa’s track accomplishments this year speak for themselves,” Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Manly Kanoa said. “She set and reset her own state record in the triple jump several times, and she was mentally tough in a variety of different situations. But she knows there’s room to improve and she’ll continue to push the envelope.”
