Mid-Pacific’s Skyla Alcon proved she can do it on her own if she has to.

The senior upset defending champion Taylor Lau 6-4, 6-3 to secure the girls singles title in the Carlsmith Ball / HHSAA State Tennis Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park.

She added that gold medal to the doubles title she won with Cori Cummings last year.

Lau knows all about how upsets happen, she beat three-time champ Alyssa Tobita of Mililani in the final last year.

Punahou’s Kawika Lam wasn’t about to get upset, beating Hawaii Baptist’s Jeffrey Liang 7-5, 6-3 for his third straight boys singles title. He ties a record set from 1975-77.

Top seeds Jordan Azuma and Phuc Hyunh of Iolani secured the boys doubles title with a 7-6(7), 6-4 win over Austin Hamamoto and Travis Lau of Punahou.

Punahou duo Katreina Corpuz and Alyssia Fossorier upset Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato of Kamehameha-Maui for the girls doubles title.

Punahou predictably swept both team titles, the 25th straight for the boys and the 13th in a row for the girls.
