7 ranked girls advance to Maui Invitational semifinals

If Kelani Corbett, right, is going to get her slam this year, Waianae's Kaleinani Makuaole is going to make her earn it.

Seven girls in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser pound-for-pound top 10 advanced Friday to the semifinals of the 51st Garner Ivey Invitational wrestling tournament at War Memorial Gym in Wailuku.

One weight class to watch as they head to the finals and semifinals Saturday is at 168 pounds, where three-time state champion Kelani Corbett of Leilehua and Kaleinani Makuaole of Waianae could meet again.

Two weekends ago, Corbett — a senior and No. 1 pound-for-pound — lost a 6-5 match to Makuaole. It was her first defeat since her freshman season.

The seven other p4p girls in Saturday’s semifinals are No. 2 Ashley Gooman (122 pounds) of Kamehameha, No. 3 Nanea Estrella (127) of Lahainaluna, No. 4 Jahnea Miguel (138) of Baldwin, No. 6 Roxie Umu (184) of Kealakehe, No. 8 Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp (132) of Baldwin, and No. 10 Sami Saribay (107) of Lahainaluna.

The three other ranked wrestlers are not competing at the event — No. 5 Kapoina Bailey of Konawaena, No. 7 Paige Respicio of Kamehameha and No. 9 Tangiteina Niupuivaha of Kahuku.

Aside from Corbett’s three state titles, Gooman and Estrella own two each, and the other pound-for-pounders have one each.

If they win their semifinals, some other collisions that could materialize are Estrella vs. Kamehameha’s Alexis Posiulai, and Waianae’s Tiare Carlson vs. Lahainaluna’s Tayler Pelegrino-Hayase. Posiulai and Pelegrino-Hayase are right below the top-10 pound-for-pound cutoff.

Two schools from the mainland are competing in the tourney — La Grande (La Grande, Ore.) and Century (Hillsboro, Ore.).
