Leilehua’s Keawe Andres rises to Poly Bowl Combine honors

By Paul Honda on July 16, 2021

Coaches at the receiver position got their look, hours worth of reps, at the Polynesian Bowl Combine on Saturday. By the end of 7-on-7 competition, nearly seven hours after the day had started, Leilehua senior Keawe Andres stood before his peers. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound pass catcher was named one of the top five players at his spot, one of five co-MVPs. The pronouncement in the announcement was slightly puzzling. “They said ‘No. 161, Kiwi Annndrez,’ ” Andres recalled. His confusion […]

Leilehua’s Kalei Akagi ready for next chapter: West Point

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2021

On the gridiron, the speed, versatility and reliability of Kalei Akagi made him a Swiss Army knife for Leilehua’s offense. Little did Akagi know that more than a year after playing his unexpectedly last high school football game — in November of 2019 — he would literally become a member of the U.S. Military Academy. Akagi signed a letter of intent to play football for Army. West Point awaits. “I feel honored and blessed with this opportunity to further my […]

The Campbell senior signed his letter of intent to play football at UCF, finalizing a recruiting process that began two years ago. “I’m finally at ease. The process is over and now I’m focusing on preparing myself for the next level,” said Mokiao-Atimalala, who has a 3.5 grade-point average. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound wide receiver/defensive back had 20 scholarship […]

ON THIS DATE IN 2019: Kalei Akagi full of big plays for Leilehua

By Jerry Campany on November 16, 2020

In a reminder of what we are missing, on this date last year Kalei Akagi popped two big scores and Leilehua beat Baldwin 34-7 in the opening round of the state tournament at War Memorial Stadium. Akagi scored on a 72-yard reverse to begin the game and later broke the plane on a 91-yard kick return. Sophomore Jemell Vereen rushed for 174 yards and the Mules defense stepped up with a score. The Mules left Maui with the victory and […]

ON THIS DATE: Kapolei comes back with 35-0 fourth quarter

By Jerry Campany on September 14, 2020

On this date in 2013, Kapolei played 12 minutes of nearly perfect football. The Hurricanes scored 35 points in the fourth quarter to beat Leilehua 48-27 at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. The Mules, ranked No. 7 in the state, turned the ball over three times in the final stanza. Mana Reis scored two of his three touchdowns in the spurt and Kainoa Brown punched in the go-ahead score with 4-yard effort with 4:06 left. It was the first and last 100-yard […]

By Nick Abramo on March 5, 2020

OIA and ILH interleague football will continue with a full slate of games to be scheduled for the 2020 season, according to OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka. And two schools — Leilehua and Roosevelt — are moving up a division. “It’s a go,” Tanaka said Thursday morning. The renewal of the highly popular, fan-friendly two-year pilot program was not a given, and multiple sources over the past few months told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that it was possible OIA principals would […]

Out of the shadows, Leilehua WR Jonathan Vasquez steps up at JPS Senior Bowl

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2019

Maybe this was the last touchdown catch of Jonathan Vasquez’s life, but it probably won’t be. There just aren’t that maybe 6-foot-2, 195-pound pass catchers with the body control, deep-ball skills and focus that he has. Maybe this is just the first chapter in a new book for the Leilehua senior. Playing in a defensive, almost tortuous (for fans of offensive football) demonstration of might by Team Liberty, Vasquez stepped up in a large way on Friday night. He hauled […]
