There will be no Mililani showdown against national powerhouse Mater Dei. The game, scheduled for Sept. 11 at St. John Bosco’s stadium, has been called off. The DOE announced on Wednesday that all fall sports have been put on hold until Sept. 24, ending what could have been a peak experience for the Trojans. “(Coach Rod York) broke the news that we’re not going to end up going to Cali,” wide receiver Kainoa Ferreira said. “All the boys were really […]

The Oahu Interscholastic Association is pushing the start of fall sports back to late September. The official press release is expected by 11 a.m. today, but three administrative sources confirmed the OIA will take action. All fall sports practices are cancelled until further notice. The rising rate of COVID-19 cases, spurred by the Delta variant during the pandemic, is the cause for concern. Preseason games were scheduled to begin on Friday. The OIA’s regular season was slated to start on […]

ILH champion William Ho’s secret to conquering the hill

By Paul Honda on March 17, 2021

A good day of school for William Ho would be mentally unpleasant for a lot of other students. The Kamehameha senior doesn’t like math. He loves math. Ho, who has a 4.26 grade-point average, ranks his favorite math classes. 1. Algebra II 2. Vector Calculus 3. Linear Algebra 4. Calculus AB/BC Calculus. Algebra. The latter is especially compelling. “I would say just how applicable it is and, yes, the logic behind it is really interesting,” the new Interscholastic League of […]

Tennis is the apple of her eye, but Jolie Nguyen says there’s love for everything, including cross country. Nguyen is a tennis player first. During the cross country season, which had been postponed from fall to winter, she prioritized training for tennis, a […]

Fueled by disappointment, ‘Iolani roars to ILH boys cross country title

By Paul Honda on March 13, 2021

The drive was powered by frustration, which turned into an Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship for ‘Iolani on Saturday. The Raiders got a 2-3-4 finish from freshmen Devin Pang (10 minutes, 42 seconds) and Keane Palmer (10:47), and senior Joshua Lerner (10:48) at a hilly, wet and sunny course at Mid-Pacific Institute. The Raiders finished with 34 points to get past defending state champion Punahou (44). Seniors Andrew Rosen, Michael Shiinoki, Kainoa Tandy and Ashten Akemoto powered the Raiders’ ultra […]

Punahou dynasty continues with another ILH girls cross country title

By Paul Honda on March 13, 2021

Punahou’s girls and ‘Iolani boys waited 16 months for another shot at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. It was worth the wait. The Buffanblu, coached by Duncan Macdonald, rode their depth and a near-individual title by Sasha Iizuka-Sheeley to capture the ILH girls cross country team title at Mid-Pacific Institute. The Raider boys charged to their team title behind a strong individual runner-up finish by freshman Devin Pang. Punahou is the winner of the last eight girls cross country […]

Kamehameha’s William Ho, Madison Murata are favorites in ILH cross country championships

By Paul Honda on March 9, 2021

So few races, so many potential winners. Cross country was cancelled across the state in the 2020-21 academic year with the exception of one entity: the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The private-school organization postponed all fall sports, and one of the few to be revived in the winter was cross country. With strict COVID-19 protocols, runners have remained on courses with only their teammates in staggered schedule formats. When the ILH championships run at Mid-Pacific Institute on Saturday, there will […]

Uphill climb hasn’t slowed MPI’s cross country harriers

By Paul Honda on March 2, 2021

The course at Mid-Pacific Institute is fun and painful, even for champions. The Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s cross country runners know that final hill run before the finish quite well. When the league championships are hosted by MPI on Mar. 15, it will be a true test of skill and will. The host school will be in the running, so to speak, against powerhouses Punahou, ‘Iolani and Kamehameha. COVID-19 protocols will continue to apply. Staggered run times for each school […]
