VIDEO: Kahuku’s muddy 16-6 win over Campbell

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2022

Sometimes, perfection is messy. A 30-minute downpour in normally sunny Ewa Beach set the tone for No. 1-ranked Kahuku’s 16-6 win over No. 4 Campbell. The slick, muddy field led to six Kahuku sacks — two by Leonard Ah You and two by Sione Pasi — as Campbell’s normally potent offense lost its traction. Running backs Va‘aimalae Fonoti and Clyde Taulapapa scored one touchdown each as Kahuku improved to 5-0 overall.

VIDEO: Mililani and Campbell in epic battle

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2022

No. 2 Mililani’s incredible come-from-behind 35-34 win over No. 4 Campbell had to be seen to be believed. The statistics were large enough, but the wide swings of momentum, the clutch plays by offensive and defensive units, and the amazing resilience of a Mililani team trying to bounce back from a loss to CIF powerhouse Mission Viejo all played into what might be the game of the year. Rowan Bucao was exceptional. The Campbell running back had a modest 20 […]

Kekahi Graham returns, but Saint Louis loses 3 key players

By Paul Honda on May 22, 2022

Here today, gone tomorrow. Just like that, the Saint Louis’ losses are the OIA’s gains. Freshman quarterback phenom Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele is transferring from Saint Louis to Campbell. One of his big-play targets, sophomore wide receiver Kache Kaio, is en route to Kahuku. Another stellar contributor, 6-foot-2, 358-pound offensive lineman Iapani “Poncho” Laloulu, has left Saint Louis and is returning to Farrington for his upcoming senior year. Laloulu cracked the rotation last year despite the presence and talent of 12 […]

Men in black, white and orange: Campbell’s lockdown ‘D’

By Paul Honda on November 7, 2021

Orange Crush is always refreshing. At Campbell, life in the post-Titus era has been part revelation, part reality. A cast of contributors who do their jobs. What was lost with the cancelled 2020 season — offensive playmaker Titus Mokiao-Atimalala was destined for another monster season — has been found once again through the Sabers’ defense. Eight Campbell defenders notched at least three tackles in a 36-3 win over No. 9 Kapolei on Saturday night. The Hurricanes missed the services of […]

Nevada sees huge potential in Campbell’s Kamaehu Kopa-Kaawalauole

By Paul Honda on July 4, 2021

The roster of the 2019 Campbell Sabers football team listed Kamaehu Kopa-Kaawalauole as a 6-foot, 175-pound freshman. Not quite, he says. “At the end of eighth grade, I was this skinny twig walking around. I was probably 6 foot, 140 or 150 pounds,” said Kopa-Kaawalauole, who transferred from Hawaii Technology Academy to Campbell. “At the end of ninth grade, I was 6-1 and a half, and 150.” Kopa-Kaawalauole has grown in every way since then as a student and athlete. […]

Optional conditioning at Campbell draws 90 varsity, 65-plus JV prospects

By Paul Honda on June 22, 2021

While numbers at many prep football programs are fair to middling, the Campbell Sabers are bursting at the seams. The Sabers have roughly 90 players training for the varsity squad, and coach Darren Johnson will have to pare that down to 65 when official tryouts are done in July. A tri-scrimmage with Kahuku and Kaimuki on July 29 will help with evaluation immensely. “I think Kahuku and our team will run 2s and 3s,” Johnson said of depth charts. “What […]
