Maryknoll boys basketball coach Kelly Grant guided the Spartans to the Division I state championship last season, but despite the departure of key players due to graduation, he is highly optimistic.

One of those reasons is 6-foot-11 Sage Tolentino, who was featured by Paul Honda here.

Coach Grant chatted with Hawaii Prep World on Monday.

The kid hasn’t done anything significant yet at the varsity level in Hawai‘i and you’re comparing him to pros? This needs to stop in Hawai‘i. Sports writers and “skills trainers/coaches” need to stop gassing these kids and their parents up to the point where they think if they don’t go D1, then they’ve failed! Those of you that do this are problematic to these kids. Do your actual research. If a kid or his parents tell you he has a scholarship offer, call the staff at that school and verify that information before you publish it. Any kid holding a scholarship from a power conference school, or a top 25 school, or a high mid major will be listed on a legitimate recruiting website. If he ain’t there, the offer ain’t there. Stick to reporting facts, not fiction please
