Punahou, Farrington continue to ground, pound
. While powerhouses Kahuku and Saint Louis have found success through the aerial game, Punahou and Farrington — both still unbeaten — have relied heavily on the cornerstones of defense and the ground attack. Farrington, which zoomed four notches up to No. 2 in The Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 (to be released in print Tuesday), [...]
Friday Night Lights: Corrections, Mumblings
We’re 16 minutes from kickoff (supposedly) here at Kahuku where the Red Raiders and Saint Louis Crusaders are warming up. The crowd’s warming up, too. Saint Louis fans in their navy-blue Crusader tees have packed the bleachers, shoulder to shoulder and okole to okole. It is almost … electric. I’ll try to avoid the usual [...]
Lights on at Kahuku
After power outages caused the postponements of two football games last year and this fall, Kahuku has the problem under control. “The lights were fixed about an hour after they went out (last week),” Kahuku athletic director Joe Whitford said of a home game against Kailua. “It was a blown fuse on a pole.” A [...]

OIA Red West preview
“The road goes through them. They’re definitely loaded now,” the Leilehua coach said. “Two years ago, we won the JV title, but our only loss was to Mililani, and they didn’t have Trent (McKinney) then.”
OIA Red East preview
There have been deeper, larger and bigger teams in the storied gridiron history of Kahuku football. There may not have been, however, a squad this balanced from position to position in some time.
OIA White preview
. (Full preview of football teams in the OIA White.) Smaller schools like Kalaheo can endure all the challenges of academic issues and low turnout numbers. Yet, when August comes around, things change in a hurry. Though the Mustangs were so few back in the offseason that they had to cancel a game at Lahainaluna, [...]
Open season
Football season started around the state on Friday with a slew of games, including Saint Louis’ win over Roosevelt and Mililani’s tough victory over Kaimuki. The Star-Advertiser’s FL Morris was on hand to shoot the Saint Louis game while Jamm Aquino trekked to Mililani.
Scrimmage notes
Some observations from two scrimmages I saw recently. Waianae @ Pearl City Missed the first 15 minutes, but caught the rest. Waianae is still evaluating players, so they lined up in the shotgun most of the first half (if not all). Not much success there. Pearl City did a fairly good job finishing defensively. Sound [...]
